Eye Exams for Contact Lenses

Expert Fittings by Your Raleigh Contact Lenses Specialist

Contact lenses are enjoying popularity as a convenient and comfortable form of vision correction. They give sharp vision without the nuisance of wearing eyeglasses on your face. However, in order to make sure that your Raleigh contact lenses fit well and preserve the health of your eyes, you need to visit our office for an eye exam and fitting. Contact lenses are not one-size-fits-all, and only a qualified eye care professional can determine the right lens powers, size, and type for your eyes. To benefit from all that contacts have to offer, contact our office to schedule a Raleigh eye exam.

Contact Lenses Eye Exam

When our Fox Eye Care optometrists check your eyes to fit contact lenses, the eye exam involves much more than doing basic vision testing. We will use advanced diagnostics and technology to perform your eye exam, along with personalized attention to address your unique visual issues.

In addition to figuring out your vision prescription (which is usually different from your glasses prescription), we will also inspect your ocular health to detect or rule out any pre-existing conditions, such as dry eyes, a common condition. To diagnose dry eye syndrome, we may perform a tear film evaluation. To do this, your eye doctor will put a drop of liquid dye on your eye and then inspect your tears closely with a slit lamp or place a special strip of paper under your eyelid to absorb the tears. If your tear film is not strong enough, we may recommend specialty contact lenses that maintain more moisture.

The next step of your Raleigh contact lenses eye exam is to measure your eyes precisely. We will use a keratometer to check for any corneal variations or irregularities. Our eye doctor will also evaluate corneal curvature, pupil size, and iris size.

Your detailed contact lenses prescription will include:

  • Base curve (lens curvature)
  • Lens diameter
  • Power of each lens
  • Manufacturer and brand-name of lenses

Fitting the Best Contact Lenses for You

After we complete your Raleigh eye exam and decide that you are a good candidate for wearing contacts, our eye doctors will ask you questions about your lifestyle and visual requirements. We will also explain the advantages and disadvantages of all your Raleigh contact lenses options. If you have any questions – this is the time to ask them, and we will do our best to answer them fully. We are dedicated to helping you make an informed decision about your eyewear.

To fit you with the perfect pair of contact lenses, please consider the following issues before your eye exam:

  1. Do you want to wear lenses on a daily basis, or only for special activities (eg: sports) and occasions?
  2. How often do you want to replace your contacts? Daily or monthly?
  3. Do you want rigid, gas permeable or soft contacts? Nowadays, soft lenses are more popular, yet hard contacts have particular advantages.
  4. If you have presbyopia, do you want multifocal lenses?
  5. Do you want to change the color of your eyes?

Trying On Your Contact Lenses

After your eye exam, it is time to try on some lenses! Trial and error is often the most efficient way to determine which contacts are the best fit. We will provide instruction on proper insertion. Once your contacts are in, we will evaluate how they rest and move on your eye. Your feedback about how they feel is essential! After a short trial (about 15 minutes), we will be able to issue your prescription. Our optometrist will also provide guidelines about how long to wear your contacts, disinfection, and storage.

Follow-Up Raleigh Eye Exams

We strongly encourage all of our patients who wear contacts to visit for regular follow-up eye exams. This is the only way for us to monitor the health and clarity of your vision, as well as check the condition of your contact lenses. If we detect any problems, we may recommend a change in the type of lenses or your wearing schedule.

To get started with wearing contacts, contact our Raleigh eye doctors to book an eye exam. We look forward to fitting you with sharp and comfortable vision!
